Global pharmaceutical company Wockhardt UK, which has reserved capacity to enable the supply of several vaccines to the UK government in its fight against COVID-19, was delighted to welcome His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) to its Wrexham manufacturing plant.
Wockhardt UK specializes in the manufacture of sterile injectables and is one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies in the UK with the capacity to manufacture on a large scale. Wockhardt is a major supplier to the NHS and has had a site in Wrexham for over 20 years. It employs more than 500 people in the 612,000 square foot high tech factory.
While acknowledging the visit as a mark of honor, Wockhardt Founding President Dr Habil Khorakiwala said: âToday’s visit by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales demonstrates recognition of our global strength in facilities and sterile injection capacity. With the expertise and experience behind us, we were able to quickly rise to the occasion, scale up vaccine manufacturing and help mitigate the global impact of COVID-19. “
Wockhardt UK was instrumental in the manufacture of the Oxford / AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and performs the ‘fill and finish’ step of the vaccine manufacturing process. The company has a manufacturing contract with the UK government in place until August 2022. This involves the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in vials ready to be sent across the country.
The visit comes eight months after Wockhardt hosted Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who thanked staff for their hard work, saying vaccines could bring “salvation for humanity.”
Dr Murtaza Khorakiwala, Managing Director and Global CEO of Wockhardt adds: âWe are delighted to present our innovation, talent and expertise at Wockhardt UK to His Royal Highness. We are committed to the cause and can be a key partner globally in the fight against the world’s most pressing need of the hour during COVID-19. “
Ravi Limaye, Managing Director of Wockhardt UK, said: âIt is a great honor to have His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales visit us today. We have been working at a steady pace to ensure that our sophisticated sterile facility and highly skilled workforce are manufacturing the vaccines that have already been widely distributed to people across the UK. “
“Having His Royal Highness here to show the pride and purpose of the Wockhardt team in Wrexham means a lot to everyone.”
