De Jong, 25, sparked interest from United as it became known he was Erik ten Hag’s priority target.
However, Barcelona’s financial situation meant De Jong’s future hung in the balance, with debts of £1billion and tight controls on recruitment and spending.

Flynn Clarke joins Walsall on loan from Norwich City
Norwich City youngster Flynn Clarke has joined League Two Walsall on loan for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, former Norwich goalkeeper Aston Oxborough, 24, who was released by his boyhood club at the end of last season, is currently on trial at League Two Colchester United.

Liverpool Women sign Flaherty
Liverpool Women signed Gilly Flaherty after leaving West Ham.
The experienced defender enjoyed successful stints with Arsenal and Chelsea Women, before spending four years in charge of the Hammers, where she worked for a time with current Liverpool boss Mark Beard.
Beard said: “I’ve worked with Gilly before and followed her career when she was at Arsenal and Chelsea. She’s a fantastic defender, a great person, she’s a leader and I can’t wait to work with her again.
“We had a great working relationship at West Ham and I think we’re really lucky that she decided to move on and chose Liverpool. She can play at centre-back, she can play as a midfielder, which she’s done a few times in her career, so again, that’s a bit of versatility as well.

Brentford close to signing Strakosha
Brentford are set to sign free agent Thomas Strakosha amid doubts over the long-term future of first-choice goalkeeper David Raya, Athleticism understand.
Raya and his representatives held a meeting with Brentford in May to discuss the terms of a new deal, but the 26-year-old did not accept their initial offer. It is understood that both parties want him to stay at the club and will continue to talk to find a positive solution.
Brentford were in the hunt for a replacement goalkeeper in the summer, but it looks like Strakosha is potentially in the process of replacing Raya. The Albania international is set to join the club on a four-year deal after his contract with Lazio expires.
