The best free agents out there

THE transfer window has closed for another six months – and Celtic and Rangers will be pretty happy with the deals they’ve done.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some squad additions that Premiership teams could make right now.

Barrie McKay in action for Fleetwood

It is a tradition at this time of year for teams who still have a few spots left to fill their squads to start scrambling for players who couldn’t find a club before the transfer window closes.

Take Swansea City, for example, which caught the riddle who is former Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham.

Or Hearts for that matter, who, we told you, is actively pursuing former Rangers star Barrie McKay.

And with Covid affecting budgets across the UK, this summer there are more big names than ever who haven’t quite figured out their landing points for this season.

Could any of them do a job at your club? Some are more realistic targets than others.

But here’s SunSport’s guide to the best free agents still available.

Efe Ambroise

Last club: Livingston

Made 28 appearances last season, including a national cup final. It’s another decent comeback for the 32-year-old Nigerian, who is still looking for his next home after leaving the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Tony Andreu

Last club: Ross County

Now 33, the little French playmaker played a few games with the Highlanders last season. Could he still do a job?

Serge Aurier

Last club: Tottenham Hotspur

Both Old Firm teams are well stocked at the back – but if they weren’t, the Ivory Coast team captain – whose run-of-the-mill contract with Spurs was recently canceled – would have Worth a look if the deal wasn’t too rich.

Mo Besic

Last club: Sheffield United (loan)

Celtic have signed James McCarthy, Besic’s former team-mate at Everton, to patrol their midfield, but Bosnia-Herzegovina international Besic is a few years younger and still in the market.

Robbie brady

Last club: Burnley

Strongly linked to Celtic when Eddie Howe was scheduled to become manager. Able to operate at left-back, a position where the Hoops could still consider strengthening themselves, even if he would block Liam Scales’ path to the first team.

Kean bryan

Last club: Sheffield United

The English youth cap and the 24-year-old center-back have spent time with the Blades in the Premier League. Started at Manchester City.

Andy Carroll

Last club: Newcastle United

It’s a little-known fact that Scotland actually tried to get this imposing 6-foot-4 target to play for them ahead of their first selection to England. Back in the market after leaving the Newcastle squad and certainly an air presence.

Ciaran Dickson

Last club: Rangers

A highly rated prospect, still just 19, was pictured with a Celtic gang this week after his rather abrupt departure from Ibrox. Ross County and Burnley have also both been credited with an interest, but there has been no confirmation of his next move yet.

Ahmed Elmohamady

Last club: Aston Villa

Thirty-two now, but Elmohamady is a violin-worthy right-back who is approaching a century of selections for Egypt and has racked up over 100 appearances for Hull City and Aston Villa.

Jordan Ibe

Last club: Derby County

Another man previously linked to the Hoops, Ibe has had his fair share of issues off the pitch, including being banned from driving after crashing his supercar at a London cafe. Did not last long in County Derby after leaving Bournemouth.

Barrie McKay

Last club: Swansea City

Currently interesting Hearts, winger McKay is a fascinating case. There is no shortage of talent, but it hasn’t kicked off as many had hoped following his Rangers appearance under Mark Warburton.

The former Dons youngster, still just 19, trained with Southampton after failing to agree on the terms of a new deal. Loan spells to Raith and Dunfermline but have only started two matches for the Pittodrie side, although they will have to pay a development fee if he signs.

Daniel sturridge

Last club: Trabzonspor

Posted images on his 32nd birthday this week, saying he feels ‘more motivated than ever’, but there has been no taker for Sturridge since his brief stint in football suddenly ended Turkish. Liverpool’s bond with Gerrard sees him periodically connected with Rangers.

Neil taylor

Last club: Aston Villa

The diligent left-back who rose to prominence at Swansea recently left Aston Villa after four years in the Midlands. Reached Euro 2016 semi-finals with Wales.

Jack wilshere

Last club: Bournemouth

Still not 30, Wilshere quietly made 18 appearances for Bournemouth last season after a huge intrigue linking him to Rangers. The Gers are however well supplied in midfield after the arrival of Juninho Bacuna and John Lundstram.

André Wisdom

Last club: Derby County

Strongly linked to Celtic during the reign of Brendan Rodgers, the former Liverpool youth prospect remains a free agent after leaving Derby County. Celtic bolstered their central defense by signing Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan on deadline day.

Zdenek Zlamal

Last club: Hearts

The Czech star secured emergency loans in St Mirren and St Johnstone last season as Covid-19 struck. Sat on the phone again after showing Tynecastle’s exit door at the end of the campaign.
