Neco Williams’ Liverpool exit could be about to take another turn, as Nottingham Forest prepare to sign a new defender.
According to the transfer expert Fabrice Romano on Twitter, Forest are set to sign Troyes full-back Giulian Biancone. Just days after Liverpool rejected a bid for Williams, it appears they have moved on.
All hope is not lost yet as Biancone looks like he could play from the baseline. Most of his minutes last season, however, were recorded at right-back.
If Forest have indeed dropped their pursuit of Williams, Liverpool could be on the verge of losing a good chunk of the money. The newly-promoted side would have been the only team still in contention for the Welshman, after Fulham dropped out.
Williams has gone into limbo for now
Liverpool are apparently not looking to do any other incoming business in the transfer window. As a result, not selling Williams this summer may not be the end of the world.
But after an excellent half-season with Fulham, the 21-year-old’s stock may never be higher. If he stays at Anfield, he is unlikely to get any meaningful minutes next season. Its value could fall accordingly.
A player to watch for all 32 World Cup teams
Therefore, if Liverpool cannot sell Williams by the end of August, they simply need to find him a loan deal.
Calvin Ramsay has been named as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement and his progress shouldn’t be held back.
Another good spell away from Anfield should also see Liverpool retain their £15million asking price for Williams.
Who knows, if he can impress on loan as well as at the World Cup with Wales, they might be able to raise their selling price even further.
For now though, it looks like Liverpool could be on the verge of losing a £15m profit on their academy proceeds. Time will tell if Forest see Biancone as an alternative to Williams, or just to complement him.
