Birmingham City goalkeeper Archie Matthews joins Gloucester City on loan

Gloucester City have signed goalkeeper Archie Matthews on loan from Birmingham City.

He will make his debut in the National League North match at Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday, replacing injured Liam Armstrong and Jake Cole.

Under-21 prospect Alex Avenell made his debut in last week’s home defeat to Gateshead.

Matthews started his career at Swindon Town Academy where he became a Researcher in 2017.

He spent much of the following months on loan at AFC Totton, Thatcham Town and Melksham Town in the Southern League Division One.

He signed for Championship club Birmingham City on August 9, 2021 on a one-year contract.

Most recently, he spent a month on loan at National League South club Bath City.

City manager Lee Mansell said: “We are delighted to welcome Archie to the club, we hope his loan spell with us will be fruitful.

“It’s a position that obviously had to be addressed due to the injuries Liam and Jake have suffered over the past two weeks.”

“People I’ve spoken to about Archie can’t speak highly enough of him as a goalkeeper and his character.

“Archie trained for the first time on Friday and has settled in well with the lads and is off to a good start and we can’t wait to see what he can do in a Gloucester City shirt next month.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Dylan Barkers’ month-long loan spell from Cheltenham Town has been extended until the end of the season.
